Shopping for barstools can be quite a daunting task because there are truly an endless array from which to choose. Of course the selection can be somewhat narrowed down by the existing décor, the space to be occupied, the needs of the homeowner or establishment and the desired style. Depending on a home or business’ design style such as traditional, contemporary, shabby chic, etc., there are many options available that will blend in cohesively.

With more and more new homes being constructed or existing homes being remodeled to feature the more contemporary open floor plans of today, many kitchens are equipped with bar areas or ledges of countertop under or at which barstools may be placed. It is in this space that most guests and family members tend to gather. Whether to socialize, eat or do homework, these bar height counters are a very popular space in the home and therefore require a more comfortable barstool choice. In addition to indoor kitchen spaces, barstools are often needed for homes with back patios or even outdoor kitchen facilities and for of course, bar height or “pub” style tables.

There are an absolute dizzying array of barstools available and designers are always recreating them with fine artistry and forward thinking design. They’re made from various materials that include but are not limited to, wood, metal, plastic and combinations of these, or of other materials. For outdoor use, plastic, bamboo and aluminum are most popular.

Some barstool models feature swivel seats, padded or wood or metal armrests and/or backrests, while backless barstools are simply a padded seat without a backing and four legs or one metal post with a heavy base. This style is often a 50’s look and can be found in diners and modern style kitchens. Many indoor styles have upholstered seats and backrests. And both indoor and outdoor models may feature foot rests.

Along with various materials, barstools are also created in varying heights from 30 to 36 inches as opposed to the standard dining chair which has a seat of only 18 inches in height.  Some barstools are height adjustable by spinning the seat to the right or to the left which will cause it to gain or lose height as needed.

For the more discerning customer, barstools can also be custom created using the materials and upholstery desired by the client. As with any customized furnishings, the cost of having specific barstools created can be quite a bit more than if purchasing standard sizes and styles.
