Traditional living rooms that have a sofa against the wall and a large coffee table in front of the sofa and two or three side or end tables are the least practical living room designs when it comes to functionality. How often have you banged your knees or bumped your legs against a coffee table? How many times would you have sat on your cozy living room carpet had it not been for the coffee table in the center of the floor?

Coffee Table and End Table Alternatives

If you redesign your furniture arrangement you can make your space much more functional, open and comfortable while still keeping the practical side in mind. It’s obvious that living room sofa tables are needed to set drinks on or to have books or magazines or small useful or decorative items. So, place your sofa away from the wall, try to place it in the center, or just off center, of the room. Place your loveseat or armchairs in a circular or square or rectangular setting with a round or rectangular or square area rug in the center. Eliminate the coffee table altogether. Now place a narrow sofa console table behind the couch, right against the back. The console table you choose should be as long as the sofa if possible. This piece of furniture will take the place of the center coffee table for magazines etc. It’s just as easy to reach back to get a magazine as it is to reach forward. Make sure the sofa console table you have selected is not only as long as the sofa but also as high as the back so it’s easy to reach. Now, place two low console table arrangements beside the side of the sofa or chairs or loveseat. These can also be narrow designs that fit alongside the chairs or sofa and take up as little space as possible while offering a place to set drinks or books or other items. If you use magazines a lot, use a rack or basket instead of a table. Your floor space is now more open. You can move more freely, sit on the carpet, talk in a circle or closed space but there is still room to move around the living room suite.

The Benefits of Switching to Console Tables

By using a narrow sofa console table you eliminate the need for a cumbersome coffee table, and by using matching low console table units instead of end tables you have more space for magazines, books and curios in a more organized manner. Try to choose consoles that have a drawer or a series of shelves, open or closed, and thereby giving yourself more storage in the same space. Remember that coffee tables and end tables seldom have drawers or shelves and are just a table top that waists space.
