The styles of writing desks range in materials from wood, metal and even plastics. Many of the older desks were made of hard woods and have stood the test of time. These older pieces were made to high quality standards for lasting durability.

The classic wood desk for writing is actually sturdier than many metal and plastic ones. Faux wood and composite materials are best to avoid if possible. You will find that a genuine wood desk is much more durable and resistant to the effects of water.

You may be able to more easily find an antique writing desk than in the past. These cost a bit more but are worth the investment if you plan on using it. Good deals are available on these antique items at your local antique dealer, garage and estate sales. While quite a bit larger, the secretary’s desk has some of the same features as the smaller writer’s desks. If you want somewhere that you are able to keep tidy and secure then a roll top desk might be what you need. These give you quite a bit of working space, then when you are finished just pull the cover over and no one will be able to see anything under it.

You can find antiques that fit perfectly into your decor. A small desk might also be better suited for your particular space.

You might be looking for a modern writing desk instead. These are often painted or stained, white being the most popular color choice. If you pair this desk with a white desk chair, it can be handy in a home office, den or even child’s room. Your guests might appreciate such a small desk placed beneath a window to enjoy.

Black is another common color choice, though you need to make sure that it doesn’t overpower your other furniture pieces if too large.

Behind these color choices of black or white, stains in mahogany, oak, and cherry are the most likely to be found. Your choice will be largely dependent on how you plan on using the desk and also your other furniture items. Writing on the desk will actually damage the wood unless you use some type of pad. If the desk is strictly for decorative purposes, then you should not be as concerned about minor imperfections, they actually add character.

You may wish to re-finish your wood writing desk if it is in a state of disrepair or damaged in some way.
