Living in a home with little space it tough, though you can manage your space a bit easier with a drop leaf table. These tables are designed to fold compactly away when you’re not using them, leaving you more open space in your home. And while you can buy them online or in home improvement stores for a couple hundred dollars, it’s also very possible to build your own, and revel in a little DIY project. Here’s a brief outline on what’s involved in this process.

You need the raw materials – the wood – to build the table. There are sets on sale where you can get it already formed and sanded, so you can just put it together and enjoy it. This is the easiest way for most people, though if you are feeling especially bold you could try building raw wood and doing all the forming yourself. This takes some woodworking skill, though there’s no better way to make for a beautiful table that will mean more to you than just a store bought piece.

The first step is usually adding the leaves. You’ll be setting the pieces of plywood next to each other and attaching the hinge to each of them. There are usually two hinges on each side, and each one is equidistant from the edge and from each other.

Once you have them on you’ll want to hold them in place with a temporary piece of wood, and then add the legs to the table. You need to balance it to make sure it stands okay with the leaves out. Then you can lower them, work the hinges, and make sure everything is going smoothly.

It’s easy to buy a drop leaf table and chairs, but it’s more difficult to build the thing yourself. The results can be very rewarding though – it’s something to consider if you have a craving to build something.
