The tub chair as we know it today had its origins from the French royal court, particularly in the court of Louis XV. There it was considered to be the high water mark in comfortable furniture. It combined the elegance and the dignity of a throne, while providing the comfort and relaxation of a common couch. While tub chairs then are quite different to the ones that we are used to now, especially when it comes to the types of materials that are used, it has the same general make up.

The tub chair was then brought over to the New World where it was adopted by the great furniture makers of Philadelphia, New York , and Boston. It was there that the name tub chair got stuck with that type of chair. It probably originated as a reference to the fact that sitting on one resembled sitting inside a “tub” while bathing. While the origin of the term may not be so poetic, it does point out the important fact that sitting in a tub chair is indeed very relaxing and can be compared to taking a bath.

Today there are all sorts of tub chairs . You can have it in leather or in fabric. You can find metal tub chairs, tub chairs made of wood, and all sorts of material combinations and designs.
